The Day the Sun Stopped Shining

Sorry everyone for not posting on here for a while. Hopefully what I'm about to share will help explain why.

In my long and fascinating journey of learning the Publishing Industry I have come across some awesome blogs written by Agents, Editors and fellow writers, all of which offer some great advice and insights in what it takes to 'make it' in such a competitive world. There is one are in particular that all seem to agree on as important:

The need to prove you can build an audience.

With that in mind I slunk into my bat-cave and got the cogs in my head turning. How do I go about creating an audience? What can I do that others may not be?

Then it hit me - more like a brick wall than a glowing light bulb in the air, sadly. It was so simple! As the runner of an online RPG group I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of this sooner!

I'd make a Web Fiction series. I had a short story which had far greater potential as a Novel anyway, I could easily expand that and post it up chapter by chapter.

And so, the adventures of Cory Wilson in 'The Day the Sun Stopped Shining' was born.

Working on that has been both hard and extremely rewarding. Already I have a glowing review HERE and people dying to read what happens next!

Exciting times! If you'd like to check it out, click on the graphic below.

I hope you enjoy it!

Extracts

As I sat by my desk at work today, listening to the sound of silence coming out of my headset, it struck me that I am here writing a blog about my journey to become a Professional Writer and have yet to actually post up some of my writing!

Sacrilege!

Well, okay. I'll admit that it has a lot more to do with rabid perfectionism than it does with not having anything to put up. I got plenty on that front - honest!

This rather stunting need to have my work as perfect as I can possibly make it before letting any eyes other than my wife's see would have held true, had it not been for a rather fun week of posts done by the awesome, amazing, enigmatic INTERN . All this week she has been running 'International S**ty First Draft Week', celebrating the wonderful properties of the not-always amazing first draft.

It encouraged me to make a first draft or two of my own see the light of day.

So, without further ado. Let me introduce you to an excerpt from 'The Day the Sun Stopped Shining' - about a man named Cory Wilson, a tightly-wound salesman who wakes up to find the sun has been extinguished overnight. With the temperature plummeting, he embarks on a treacherous journey across his self-destructing home state of Montana to find The Doomsday Dome - a place he heard about on the local radio.

With only a cryptic riddle for directions, Wilson will need more than just sharp wits to survive in a world where Law and Order has ceased to exist.

We pick up just after Cory has escaped the clutches of the twisted Johnson family, who tried to make him their slave/maid at gunpoint...

Wilson spotted the 'low energy' light flicker into life on the dashboard. His heart leaped into his mouth while questions along the likes of 'now what?' ran at the speed of light through his mind. It didn't even cross his mind to look up at the road until he almost drove off it.

The he saw it, a tall neon gift from heaven drawing closer by the second. A big red and white sign was announcing the fact this was the last chance for 'Gas' in a hundred miles. Despite his profusely thanking the stars above for this stroke of luck, he found himself smugly smiling at the fact that the last Gasoline driven vehicle had been scrapped over fifty years ago. These days Gas Stations sold vehicle batteries, which at the size of a Coke can, could be clipped into place with ease. Thanks to the advent of air-fuelled battery technology, a single battery could be used to drive for hundreds of miles before ever having to be replaced.

Yet even after fifty years, Gas Stations refused to change their names.

Five minutes later, he pulled into a parking space and glanced nervously down the way he'd come, comforting himself by noting a distinct lack of vehicles on the road. Darkness and silence that way was good. It meant he wasn't being chased.

Nearby a hawk-faced woman stood in the bright glow of a spotlight, talking loudly into a mobile phone. She paid no attention to the world around her which Wilson, recent events considered, didn't mind a bit.

The station attendant was working from a Night Window, watching a small plasma TV to distraction. As he approached, Wilson was not even offered a polite greeting.

“One personal car battery please,” Wilson said whilst searching his pockets for his wallet, “And a can of Caffeine-O.”

The attendant, a rotund balding man in his middle years, did not even move his feet off the counter. The name 'Hal' was embroidered onto his shirt.

“Hello?” Wilson tapped the glass, “You have a customer here!”

“Shh!” Hal held a finger to his lips before leaning forward to increase the volume, “Listen to this!”

Wilson sighed impatiently, checking the highway again before leaning closer to the window so he could listen in.

“...Again, it has been confirmed that an International Consortium of Scientists have assembled at the Kennedy Space Centre in an effort to reverse the effects of the Ra Mission catastrophe,” The newscaster announced, “We don't know how long this effort has already been going on, nor which Scientists are present. In a statement made just a few moments ago, Vice President Marsh went on to say that efforts will go on around the clock until this crisis has been resolved...”

Hal turned the volume back down again, leaning back to grasp a green coloured battery, “I knew they would not just sit back and let us all die,” He said as he placed the object on a rotating shelf, “That'll be five hundred bucks.”

Wilson almost choked on his own bile. A car battery was only worth 39.99, “What?!?”

“Where have you been pal?” Hal shrugged, “Electric companies have jacked up their prices and threatened to cut off anyone who don't pay. I wanna stay warm. So five hundred for the battery or you're walkin' wherever it is you wanna go die.”

“You've got to be kidding me!”

For the first time since they met, Hal met Wilson's gaze, “Do I look like I'm jokin' around here?”

“Fine,” Wilson opened his wallet and started counting bills. His heart started pounding as it hit home he was short, “How about three hundred and fifty?”

“Looks like you're walk-” Hal's eyes suddenly widened as the ghostly reflection of Wilson's car came barrelling towards the attendant's booth, “S**T!”

Both men scrambled to get out of the way, the white saloon came crashing through the shop's wall like a cannonball. The woman who, just moments before had been chatting away on her phone, followed in its wake, climbing over the debris to scoop up as many batteries she could find.

“What are you waiting for, an invitation?” She yelled at a dumbfounded Wilson, “Give me some help will 'ya?”

Hope you enjoyed!

Revision - thou art a fickle lady...

For hours you have been stuck in that mangy old rust-bucket you call the family car. The Air Conditioning broke ten minutes into the ride. It's hot. The children are bored and asking 'are we nearly there yet?' every thirty seconds and the radio is playing nothing but garbage.

And then, finally, when all hope of ever reaching your destination seemed lost. The sign leaps out at you, telling you the long, painful journey is finally about to be over.

Good thing too. Your bum feels like it is no longer there and God help the person who tries to reach the bathroom before you...

Revision feels a lot like that long road trip which seems to never end. Constantly you're running your first novel over in your mind, finding faults and thinking of ways to fix them. Yet somehow, despite all of your fixing and tuning and polishing and crying, screaming, moaning and more crying there always seems to be something else wrong, something you missed.

Until one day the glorious moment arrives when you shout "EUREKA!!!" at the top of your lungs. The epiphany has arrived! Now you shall surely triumph and get that all important Agent's interest!

That is, until something else comes up that needs fixing...

Who else here is working on their first and feels the same way! Tell Mister Geek your tales of lengthy travels!

This Week in Sci-Fi 25-07-11

Oh the Science Fiction to be had!

Comic Con has brought us some promising projects. Hopefully this promise will yield a bountiful crop of fresh, new Sci-Fi to bestow upon the world.

Among some of the highlights are:

Prometheus - Ridley Scott returns to the helm of the 'Alien' franchise. In a short clip displayed at Comic Con over the weekend we saw hints that this movie will explore the genesis of the 'Alien' creature. But that's all that was shown - just hints. Mister Scott you big tease!

In Time - Another upcoming movie showcased at Comic Con was one which, to be honest, took me by surprise. Color me biased but few movies that either Justin Timberlake or Amanda Seyfried have been in were very good...so the idea of putting them together? The horror! Then I watched the trailer for this movie - and was blown away! Imagine a future where, after reaching the age of 25, you must literally buy more time if you wish to see the next day. The trailer shows much promise, so Justin and Amanda, I await your movie with an open mind. Let's hope you don't disappoint.

Halo 4 - Enough said. It's Halo.

*coughs* And there is an announcement of a fourth Jurassic Park movie. *coughs again*

Darned allergies...

So, moving on before we get too engrossed in all things Comic Con, lets recap the goings on this week elsewhere.

The latest episode of Falling Skies has us moving inexorably towards what is looking to be an explosive Season finale. Sadly it also saw the loss of the first of the more 'major' characters (which, in order to avoid spoilers I will not reveal whom). On a happy note, Pope is back! The Falling Skies bad boy is one character who I am starting to really like. Hopefully he'll stick around this time. Something tells me he is going to be one to watch.

IDW and DC comics are doing a 'Star Trek' and 'Legion of Superheroes' crossover. I wonder how Captain Kirk is going to handle the super-babe smorgasbord he's about to be presented with - most likely in the same way a child does when presented with a candy store. "I'll take...oh to heck with it...everything!"

And finally...

In books this week we see the release of 'Germline' by T C McCarthy (26th July, Orbit Books). I have to say this one has my interest...here's the blurb:

Germline (n.) the genetic material contained in a cellular lineage which can be passed to the next generation. Also: secret military program to develop genetically engineered super-soldiers (slang).
War is Oscar Wendell's ticket to greatness. A reporter for The Stars and Stripes, he has the only one way pass to the front lines of a brutal war over natural resources buried underneath the icy, mineral rich mountains of Kazakhstan.
But war is nothing like he expected. Heavily armored soldiers battle genetically engineered troops hundreds of meters below the surface. The genetics-the germline soldiers-are the key to winning this war, but some inventions can't be un-done. Some technologies can't be put back in the box.
Kaz will change everything, not least Oscar himself. Hooked on a dangerous cocktail of adrenaline and drugs, Oscar doesn't find the war, the war finds him.

All in all, an excellent week in Sci-Fi!

Those Clueless Moments

It is horrible, disastrous, nasty, frustrating, painful and generally not good when it happens.

'It' being those moments when you are given something to do, something specific that requires your very special skills set...

...And you draw a blank.

It can last for minutes, hours or even *shudder* days! Worse still, nothing gets done and you end up feeling even worse because not only are you coming up empty...but someone else is asking you to do the opposite of that.

Cue the horrified scream from a 50's B-movie.

When was the last time you had a clueless moment? Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine!

Delinquent DevLog Episode 1

Forward...March!

Here is the one post a week where I unashamedly tell you, my valued and wonderful readers, what works I have in progress and where I am with them. Kind of like a software developer's blog (DevLog) only without any software.

So what have I been doing this week?

Thanks to a glut of holiday time recently there has been some great progress made in the world of my writing projects! Query Letter polishing, revisions and marching forward on a new WIP (Work in Progress) are some of the highlights!

SWANSONG: THE FALLEN - (Novel) Has been undergoing some revisions to help improve the flow of the various plot elements, as well as get a bit more depth and understanding for our Main Antagonist going. Think of it as a refurbishment of a good restaurant...

ON THE WINGS OF LOVE - (Novel) Introducing you to my new WIP, a Science-Fiction story with a romantic theme to it. This particular story is being written as a wedding present to my best friend (as mentioned in 'pet project'). I'm trying a new method of polishing for this project - doing each chapter as I go along. A bit more time consuming but the results are already speaking for themselves. Chapter One is done and looking good!

SHORT STORIES - Finished writing a Christian short called 'THE PRAYER'. This one is actually quite some way out of my literary "comfort zone" so I think I'm going to be revisiting this one a few times before I'm finally happy with it.

In other short story news; back in June I submitted 'THE DAY THE SUN STOPPED SHINING' to the online Sci-Fi Magazine Strange Horizons for consideration. The process for getting results back is slow and they are very honest about the fact you're looking at a 90 day turnaround. That being said, fingers crossed!

QUERY LETTER - Ah Query Letter, how do I love thee? Well, as it turns out right now, not very much! We have a bit of a love/hate relationship does 'ole Query and Me and right now I'm once again working hard to change the bits about her that the world doesn't like so much. Good news is...there's not that much! Strong start, just the fine details that need refining.

So, as we draw to the close of Delinquent DevLog's exciting first episode, let us reflect on the fact that - unless you are extraordinarily lucky - writing is a long, winding road of self-improvement and hard work.

Do you ever find yourselves dreaming of the end of that road and what it might look like?
Hit me up with your writerly dreams below!

This Week in Sci-Fi, 18-07-11

This week! The TV Shows!

So Falling Skies has taken an interesting new turn this week - granted one which was not entirely unexpected. The double-dealer is a time honored enemy in the world of Man Vs. Alien stories.

However, that being said it has done a good job of bringing a new dimension to what was turning out to be a mere 'good' show. I'm looking forward to next week's episode!

Also we see the return of Torchwood, now with a hint of American.

The Cartoon Network has announced the upcoming debut of 'Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace'. Catch it on Friday 22nd July at 7pm!

On the convention circuit, look out for the 'Stars of Time' convention in Weston-super-Mare, UK on the 31st of this month. Meet the Sixth Doctor from the original Doctor Who series, Darth Vader, the Second Doctor's companion and much more! Not to mention the presence of the DeLorean from Back to the Future!

Tune in next week, same bat-time, same bat-channel for more goings on in the world of Science Fiction!
