This Week in Sci-Fi 25-07-11

Oh the Science Fiction to be had!

Comic Con has brought us some promising projects. Hopefully this promise will yield a bountiful crop of fresh, new Sci-Fi to bestow upon the world.

Among some of the highlights are:

Prometheus - Ridley Scott returns to the helm of the 'Alien' franchise. In a short clip displayed at Comic Con over the weekend we saw hints that this movie will explore the genesis of the 'Alien' creature. But that's all that was shown - just hints. Mister Scott you big tease!

In Time - Another upcoming movie showcased at Comic Con was one which, to be honest, took me by surprise. Color me biased but few movies that either Justin Timberlake or Amanda Seyfried have been in were very good...so the idea of putting them together? The horror! Then I watched the trailer for this movie - and was blown away! Imagine a future where, after reaching the age of 25, you must literally buy more time if you wish to see the next day. The trailer shows much promise, so Justin and Amanda, I await your movie with an open mind. Let's hope you don't disappoint.

Halo 4 - Enough said. It's Halo.

*coughs* And there is an announcement of a fourth Jurassic Park movie. *coughs again*

Darned allergies...

So, moving on before we get too engrossed in all things Comic Con, lets recap the goings on this week elsewhere.

The latest episode of Falling Skies has us moving inexorably towards what is looking to be an explosive Season finale. Sadly it also saw the loss of the first of the more 'major' characters (which, in order to avoid spoilers I will not reveal whom). On a happy note, Pope is back! The Falling Skies bad boy is one character who I am starting to really like. Hopefully he'll stick around this time. Something tells me he is going to be one to watch.

IDW and DC comics are doing a 'Star Trek' and 'Legion of Superheroes' crossover. I wonder how Captain Kirk is going to handle the super-babe smorgasbord he's about to be presented with - most likely in the same way a child does when presented with a candy store. "I'll take...oh to heck with it...everything!"

And finally...

In books this week we see the release of 'Germline' by T C McCarthy (26th July, Orbit Books). I have to say this one has my interest...here's the blurb:

Germline (n.) the genetic material contained in a cellular lineage which can be passed to the next generation. Also: secret military program to develop genetically engineered super-soldiers (slang).
War is Oscar Wendell's ticket to greatness. A reporter for The Stars and Stripes, he has the only one way pass to the front lines of a brutal war over natural resources buried underneath the icy, mineral rich mountains of Kazakhstan.
But war is nothing like he expected. Heavily armored soldiers battle genetically engineered troops hundreds of meters below the surface. The genetics-the germline soldiers-are the key to winning this war, but some inventions can't be un-done. Some technologies can't be put back in the box.
Kaz will change everything, not least Oscar himself. Hooked on a dangerous cocktail of adrenaline and drugs, Oscar doesn't find the war, the war finds him.

All in all, an excellent week in Sci-Fi!
