This week in Sci-Fi, 12-06-11

I've recently realised that doing a blog solely about writing, when it comes to me doing it on a regular basis, tends to be neglected in the face of, well, writing.

So with that in mind I had a little brainstorming session and around the time that I started pulling out what remains of my hair, I had a brainwave. Picture the scene:

There I sit, bathed in the bright light emanating from my laptop screen with a thousand thoughts racing through my head. Heavy rain patters against my bedroom window. I run a hand through my thinning hair, thinking of the jokes my wife will have ready for me if I were to make some more of it vanish.

Then it came to me. A shining beacon of genius which would save me from the deepest depths of despair...

Ahem.

The idea was to do a weekly post about what is going on in the world relevant to my writing. Which, of course, is Science-Fiction. So without any more introductory mumbo-jumbo, here is the first edition of "THIS WEEK IN SCI-FI!"

For those of you who don't know me, I am a huge, vast, zealous, completely hair-brained nut-job, foaming at the mouth fan of Star Trek (TM). Now although another Trek movie is a long way off there are, in the interim, some great Star Trek video games in the works that were recently announced at this year's E3 Gaming expo. The first is a console/PC release based on the recent movie which, I have to say, looks like it has the potential to be a lot of fun. The second is 'Star Trek: Infinite Space', a browser-based MMO game set in the Deep Space Nine (TM) era. With the Okudas (who are Gurus of Trek for those who are not as eat, sleep, love Trek as I) on the development team I am very, very excited about this upcoming game.

In books during the last week we have seen the release of Robopocalypse. Drawing on that well of premises that is 'Machine tries to kill Man', I found myself surprised to be hooked by this particular novel's description - which sees a selection of near-future characters caught up in a robotic uprising that the rest of the world around them seems completely oblivious to. Sounds like fun!

The movie 'Super 8' opened on the 10th...pretty much all there is to say on that front.

And finally we say goodbye to 'Smallville', which has recently brought to a close its tenth and final season.

Have a good week everyone!
