The Pitch

I could think of another word, which rhymes with 'pitch', to describe the process of coming up with a decent tagline for a query letter...

Condensing your novel into a single, yet attention-grabbing, paragraph has got to be, by far, the hardest task a first-time aspiring novelist will face. Especially if that novel has a plot which is devilishly complex. Before long you're sat with an empty word document thinking 'where do I start?' This happens about three hours after you sat down with a multitude of grandiose ideas in your head which, subsequently, flopped before the might of constructive self-criticism.

And that was months ago.

Reams of crumpled up balls of paper, a handful of agent rejections (due to premature querying) and a great deal of frustration later and the realization finally sinks in that this is not a journey one should undertake alone.

Well, that's my experience anyway.

So with the newfound wisdom of, perhaps, finally coming up with a good pitch I have come up with a few tips for those who might be interested. So without further ado, they are:

1) GET SOME CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Seriously. If you're anything like me you'll benefit a hundredfold from finding someone you know, who will honestly and succinctly tell you where your pitch's strengths and weaknesses lie.

2) Make a word document and fill it with as many different ideas as you can. They may not all work, to start with none may work, but it definitely helps ideas evolve and grow. It's also helpful for trying out approaching the task from different angles.

3) Have the courage to accept it when your help says an idea sucks. The first stage to reaching your potential is LETTING those who offer constructive help do so. Even if it means the occasional blow to your ego.

And of course, last but by no means least, never give up. The task may take months to complete, but it will be worth it when your labors bear fruit.

Now, fingers crossed that mine does!
